Carpet Cleaning Tips for the Holiday Season

The holiday season is upon us, and that means parties, guests, events, and more; all of which can make a mess of your carpet if you’re not careful. To keep your home looking good this holiday season, consider these tips on how to keep your carpets clean this holiday season. These simple steps will help your guests leave the festivities with the gift of clean carpets under their feet and make sure that you won’t have to deal with any nasty stains when you come back from vacation or come home from a long day at work!

Watch How Much People Walk Over Them

If you’re hosting a party, invest in some felt furniture protectors to minimize how much foot traffic and drink spills you have on your rug. This will save wear and tear, too. If it isn’t feasible to put a protective carpet layer on all of your furniture, consider taking some extra time to move some pieces around so that they aren’t in high-traffic areas.

Don’t Pretreat Stains

Though you may be tempted to spray down your carpet with liquid detergent before scrubbing it in, don’t do it. Detergents can leave a white residue that won’t come out when you vacuum later, meaning you have to re-clean those areas. If you have time and are worried about stains, pre-treat them by applying a small amount of detergent directly to each spot and rubbing vigorously for about two minutes.

Use A Good Vacuum

Vacuuming regularly can cut down on many specks of dust, pollen, and pet dander particles that may otherwise linger in your carpet fibers. Make sure you’re using a vacuum with good suction power and small, soft-tipped brushes to prevent unnecessary wear on wool and other delicate fibers. A word of caution: don’t use attachments like hair or upholstery brushes if you have hard floors beneath; they could damage a wood floor’s finish.

Blot It With Lukewarm Water

As soon as you’ve cleaned up food or liquid spills, blot them with lukewarm water. Rubbing can damage carpet fibers and cause them to wear out faster, so don’t use a cleaner that has stiff bristles.

Vinegar Solution

Mix one part vinegar and three parts water in a spray bottle and spritz down dirty areas. Allow the air to dry before walking on it again, and watch as stains are lifted from your carpeting. For particularly stubborn stains, you can repeat until they’re removed. Be careful not to oversaturate carpeting or allow the vinegar solution to sit for extended periods as it may damage some surfaces.

Chemspec Oriental Rug Shampoo

There are two things that carpet owners don’t want to deal with: unwelcome stains and germs. With a neutral pH and gentle cleansers, this shampoo is safe to use on cotton, wool and synthetic fibers. Creates a dense foam that quickly suspends deeply embedded soils for easy removal. Perfect to shampoo and refresh any rug or carpet.
